Ed, you didn't happen to capture that moment of "Oh sh*t, what was that?" when they all got spooked and flew out of the tree, did you? Wonder if anyone did.

No, and I don't think it was the guy by the tables, he was too far away. What I think happened was: An eagle was sitting on a branch and the branch broke. When that eagle flew off the others heard the "crack" of the branch, saw the other one flying away, and thought "Holy shit, what's he running for? Maybe we should be running too.".

It's the "If you see me running, you should be running too" mentality. Animals do it all the time.

Up to a certain distance eagles won't give a crap what you do, which is why they don't fly away when we're all standing there rummaging around and snapping off shutters. The guy by the tables was too far away for them to give a shit.

Thanks ken! I was using a nikkor dx55-200 vr of course. Little dinky lens compared to the others there!

Depending on what program you use for editing, you can add fill light to brighten the underside of the eagles, it'd give you a bit of detail under the wings. Try using the Histogram on a duplicate layer, brighten the underside a bit and then recover the areas you don't want bright.

Cyber, I don't know what it was, I was fighting the processing the whole time. Never had that problem before. I think my computer was just giving me the raspberries, I've had it running non-stop for a few weeks downloading stuff, so I turned it off last night to give it a rest. Plus the car ride back for some reason always takes the life out of you, you don't know who you are for a few hours when you get home.
Thanks for the advice I downloaded a trial version of lightroom tonight and am gonna fiddle around with it tomorrow n see what I can do.

You have some great shots Melinda. I use Lightroom's Fill Light feature to highlight the feathers beneath the wings and in the underbelly when they get too dark. It works well for me. A little Clarity and Sharpening and you're good to go.

I went out there on Monday but sadly didnt get much. The weather was awful. It was a rain snow mix and only 2 eagles were there. We stayed about 90 mins and 2 more showed up and got to see one eagle grab a fish and devour it right in front of us. (he ate it on a tree by the parking lot, right over our heads.) so we got a few shots, but just got unlucky with the weather. ah well. we'll be back.

I'll post my shots later tonight.
