I think Jeff is talking about the image information, like if you look it up in Photoshop - from what I read, D300 is 12 and 14 bit selectable -

Ahh, ok that makes sense. I was googleing D300 16 bit RAW and coming up empty so i was confused for a min.

my bad, I checked in camera, its 12bit. should I do 14 ya think?

there is no difference between 12 and 14. so either one is fine.

For landscapes sure, action no. But i love being able to shoot bursts. If you can live with 2.5 frames per second sure. Here is some good reading on 12 vs 14 bit

Also it will raise the file sizes, so if storage is a concern, then no.

i tried, not very hard, i noticed most of the pic is dark. and, im not a big fan of lifting darkness.. at least that much.

well it was night and a black building takes up alot of the shot.

I would think its easier to make something brighter then trying to fix an over exposed shot. no?

I would rather pull back highlights. Pushing shadows makes a lot of noise in a photo. If you shoot raw I would over expose rather than under.

dang really. I always thought once its blown, its blown. but pushing shadows does make noise, my buddy neat image always saves me.

i prefer pushing shadows, i dont like pulling back highlights and almost never do it -
