Here's an look at what I captured while shooting 3 days worth of the 2012 Air Show. Friday and Saturday were spent at Castaway's, while Sunday I had the opportunity to shoot from the Hancock.

Wow these are all great! #8 and #9 stand out to me. What did you shoot them with and from what vantage point? The longest focal lenght I see in your signature is 200mm and I doubt that was the range.

Thanks. I'm partial to the jet vapor as well. Those two were shot from Castaways, so about 20 feet above ground level. For the show i rented the Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 - Effectively 450mm on my crop body camera

Great set Nick. I assume the Hancock shots were from the antenna area, not from the observatory. I missed the cone shot. My camera didn't focus dammit.

Great set Nick! It's amazing how close the Blue Angels fly to each other! (#26)

wow - I think those are collectively the best Chicago air show photos I've ever seen. Bravo, well done.

I especially like the 2 shots of the Blue Angel very close to the water - 28 and 29 - those are just killer.

Correct, Topmedic! Yeah, the vapor cones were tough this year. It wasn't quite as humid as 2011. Hell, the thunderbirds seemed to have vapor on every pass they did once they performed after the storm last year.

They do a heck of a job, though when I compared my shots from 2012 to 2010 (last time Blue Angels were in town) they were markedly less tight this year.

Thanks, Rasidel! It was a good year. Yeah, the low-altitude snap pass is my favorite of the show. pure power and craziness. So glad I was able to capture it from up high too. The wake behind the plane is just mind-blowing. It's hard to see in this shot, but in #28, you can see the transsonic shockwave distortion on the underside of the plane near the rear. Straight down from the #5 on the tail. If it were humid enough, there would have been a sick-ass vapor cone touching the water.

Thanks Airmedic. It was an exhausting, but awesome weekend. Totally worth the sweat, and sunburn, for the A&W show haha
